GPA on Resume - Good Idea or Bad?
There are a lot of things and criteria that should be considered while writing your resume. Some candidates are very conscious about their job winning tool, the resume, that represents them to the employer before they speak to them. Especially if you are new graduate from college, you may be thinking while composing your resume what should be go on with it and what should not. How to convince the employer with your lack of or zero work experience through your resume? With no professional experience or internships, there can be the only way to impress the employer that is GPA (grad point average). Does it really work if I include my GPA (grade point average) in resume?
Answer to this question is not so simple and vary from one condition to another. Basically it depends on the two considerations:
-
Your chosen career field.
-
Extent of other qualifications described in resume.
Besides that, it also depends on the GPA itself.
Some employers specify the GPA to choose their new candidate and prefer the defined criteria of merit. Average of college GPA is 2.7 but some employers would like to see GPA 3.0 or higher. It is not necessarily demanded by the employer. If you have higher GPA, you might want to include it in your resume and it will not harm your impression.
Not doing well in school or having low GPA does not always mean that you are not legible to some responsible job. Similarly, your high GPA is not always the surety that you can land exactly to the job of your dream. But a bitter reality is that the bad GPA mentioned on resume can be a strike against the probability to win the consideration for a specific job. It indicates that GPA inclusion in resume can be a good or bad idea for a candidate and it totally depends on the nature of job and employer’s requirements.
Including GPA in resume is of good use if it offers just a piece of information. It does not mean to include all GPAs but chose only data that represents you best. Try to include only extremely high GPAs.
Inclusion of GPA in resume is a bad idea if it is less than the exceptional ratio from the employer. Secondly, if you mention your high GPA in an industry that is not directly concerned with the job you are applying for, the GPA proves useless in resume.
In case you are going to include GPA in resume, keep in mind the following things:
-
Include it if your GPA is overall 3.0 or higher.
-
If major GPA is 3.0 or higher and overall GPA is below 3.0, include only major GPA.
-
If major GPA and overall GPA both are at least 3.0 or higher, you can mention both in resume.
-
If overall GPA is 3.0 or higher and major GPA is about three tenth of overall GPA, you can mention both in resume.
